Product Information
Akai MPC500 Portable Production Workstation
Akai's MPC range of music production worktations have been hugely popular with hip-hop and dance producers for many years now. This addition to the MPC family is a little different...introducing the Akai MPC500, the first portable MPC. Because it can be run on batteries as well as mains power (psu included) you can take it anywhere, recording beats, samples and sequences wherever and whenever inspiration strikes! The compact size of the MPC-500 means it will easily fit into your backpack, record bag, or briefcase, whilst the large pads and backlit screen means that this baby MPC is still just as intuative and easy to use as it's bigger brothers. Samples, beats and productions that you create in the MPC500 can be transferred to your computer via USB or into another MPC machine with a swappable CF card.
Don't be fooled by the MPC500's small size, it's still a hugely powerful production tool featuring a 48-track sequencer and a 32-voice stereo sampler. 12 velocity and pressure-sensitive large rubber MPC pads offer the same expressive feel as the larger MPC's and can handle up to four way sample layering and velocity switching per pad. The MPC 500 comes with 16mb standard memory, but this can easily be expanded up to 128mb. Other features include a twin stereo, digital effects processor, a low pass filter with resonance, analogue inputs/outputs, MIDI in/out, headphone socket, a compact flash drive and a USB socket.
The versatile MPC500 supports standard WAV files and MIDI sequences and when connected to a Mac or PC via USB, you can drag and drop data between the computer and your MPC500's CF card, just like you would an external hard drive. Even if you already own another Akai MPC, the portable MPC500 a great addition to any producers studio. Just as home on stage or in a club, it's fully compatible with other MPCs, allowing you to extend your studio into your mobile lifestyle.
Reviews
I actually found the MPC500 easier to use than some of its later versions. The reason for this is that the LCD screen on the MPC500 contains only one or two pieces of information at a time whilst utilising the scroll wheel to change any desired parameter. The Akai MPC500 has been seen as a tool in the synth player’s arsenal on many stages and with such an affordable price tag it's easy to see why.
Admittedly Akai have omitted a fair amount in the MPC500 and this does include memory so for the professional performer I would say that a big memory card is a must, but one good point of this is that it is ready to go straight from boot with minimal loading time and fortunately the MPC500 still has full computer integration capabilities via USB so you can drag and drop samples from the MPC500 to your computer or vice versa. The Akai MPC500 is set to be one of the most popular in this series of Akai Professional products so come down to the Nevada Store to make sure you grab one for yourself!
