Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 Firewire Audio Interface
The Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 Firewire audio interface is a 1U rack unit containg 8 award winning Focusrite mic pre-amplifiers, audio resolution is 24Bit conversion D-A and A-D (Digital to Analogue & Analogue to Digital) at 96Khz sampling. There's a large variety of I/O (Inputs/Outputs) with 20 inputs and 20 outputs of varying types that include 8 x Analogue channel inputs for Mic/Line/and/or Instrument, 10 x Digital Channel Inputs - 8 x A-DAT and 2 x SP/DIF, 10 x Analogue audio outputs (8 x jack outputs plus 2 x Monitor outputs) and 10 x Digital Channel Outputs made up of 1 x Stereo SP/DIF Outputs on RCA and 8 x A-DAT outputs on an Optical connector. Other input/output options on the rear panel include 2 x Firewire ports, MIDI IN/OUT and IEC Mains Power socket.
The Saffire Pro 40 comes with an abundant amount of free software that includes the Focusrite Plug-in suite which adds Compression, Reverb, Gating and EQ VST/AU plug-ins, whilst aside from this there's the Xcite+ pack which has hundreds of royalty free loops and samples plus Novation's classic bass synth "Bass station" and not forgetting Ableton Live Lite 8.0 sequencer application. There are two independant headphone busses which will allow two entirely different mixes should you need this requirement, and the Saffire Pro 40 Control software mixing application which provides zero-latency 18 x 16 DSP Mixing and routing. The Pro 40 Control features flexible and intelligent output routing and monitoring, as well as intuitive one-click solutions, a clear and concise mixing lay-out and large on-screen metering for inputs, outputs and submixes.
For the cost of this unit there really is a massive amount of audio features included and you'd almost pay the total cost of the unit just for the 8 x Mic Pre channels, however Focusrite have provided much more than that here. This is a unit which can be used at the heart of your recording set-up, it will allow you masses of connectivity, flexibility when routing and pristine audio quality in an intuitve, affordable and well laid out package. In my experience from speaking with musicians who own home or project studios, the moment that they start to tell you that they have Focusrite equipment in their set-up this usually means that they are pretty serious about recording.
