The original design for the SM58 stems back to 1958 (which is where the '58 comes from) and has been going strong ever since although Shure readily admit that they now make technically better live dynamic microphones such as the SM87 and BETA 58A but these model have yet to earn the longevity of the Shure SM58 ...
The Universal Cardioid pattern means that the microphone will only pick up audio signals from the immediate vicinity surrounding the microphone. This is what helps to reduce feedback and allow high volume levels.
