Product Information
Allen and Heath PA12CP 500 w Powered Mixer Amplifier
Allen & Heath are a well respected manufacturer of entry to mid-level PA and sound re-enforcement equipment having had a credible history of success over the past 30 years. Whilst they may not be as high profile today as in previous years (mainly due to the massive influx of the competition) they undoubtedly still make first class products such as the PA12CP powered mixer amp shown here ..
The PA12CP is essentially a "one-stop solution" to use a cheesy American buzz-word, effectively this means that the mixer and PA section and power amp are integrated inside the same chassis and merely need the appropriately rated speakers to be attached. First off, this model kicks out a healthy 500 watts per side into 4 or 8 Ohms (switchable) which should be loud enough for most pub & club gigs, input wise it has 8 mono channels with Mic [XLR] & Line [TRS] inputs.
Aside from this there's also 2 stereo channels with two unbalanced stereo inputs on each, one is RCA whilst the other one is TRS jack. Independent gain controls provide source mixing in the channel strip and the top surface inputs [RCA] can be switched direct to Left & Right instead of the channel strip providing extra returns. There's also 2 band shelving EQ, 4 auxilliary mixes. stereo balance, mute with LED, Pre Fade Listen with LED, and 100mm faders as mono channels.
There are 4 auxilliary send s which can be used for effects or monitor mixes. a main stero mix output, a mono summing output plus the choice of an analogue record output (RCA) or digital SP/DIF. Twin 12 segment LED Bar read out meters provide a visual level indication and the PA12CP has jack insert points for external signal processing and effects.
Speaking of effects, there are 16 digital effects programs that include reverb, delay and chorus amongst others - the effects can be switched off if desired and edited via MIDI and the optional A&H editing software, the effects can also be operated (on/off) via a dedicated footswitch input. There's also a handy feature called Background Mode (BGM) which allows a stereo input of an external unit (iPod, CD etc) that provides external background music/walk-on music whilst inputing post fader ... The PA12 CP is also available in rack format ...
Reviews
The Allen & Heath PA12 CP offers astionishing value for money ... only a mere 15 years ago a seperate power amp, mixer and external FX unit would have run into at least a few thousand pounds ... Now here's a complete PA solution for a lot less than a grand !
Something that we perhaps have neglected to speak about is the small footprint of this mixer and therefore also the portability element. OK 21Kg is understandably not light enough to pop in your back pocket, but I can remember the days when it took 3 band members to carry in the PA power amp ... !
The sound and frequency cut/boost on this mixer amp is delightfully transparent and open - there are no accompanying frequencies that attack the audible sound range and each frequency type is clearly defined with good seperation. The PA12CP was auditioned using a Shure SM58 and Electrovoice EV ZX4 speaker cabinets and produced a clear smooth response with outstanding clarity, depth and gain.
Various CD's were tested through the speaker and amp ensemble from Rock through to the latest hardcore and all produced excellent results with good penetration to the rear of the Nevada Music Warehouse ... In summary, It's pretty hard to find fault with this product, the digital effects were almost studio quality, the cut and boost frequencies were smooth and transparent without overly colouring the mix and the depth, clarity and volume levels were commendable.
At the advertised price you'd be foolish not to try out this outstanding value for money Allen & Heath powered mixer amp ... check it out now at the Nevada Music Warehouse ...
