Squier Simon Neil Biffy Clyro Signature Stratocaster - FREE DELIVERY

Scottish alternative-rock trio Biffy Clyro are known for complex and interwoven guitar riffs, chord sequences and melodies, and an intense and exciting live show. Biffy were formed by guitarist and frontman Simon Neil along with twins James and Ben Johnston in the mid-'90s.  They relentlessly toured the UK and Europe, releasing critically acclaimed albums and building a loyal fanbase, before finally achieving mainstream UK success with their 2007 album Puzzle and a subsequent string of chart topping singles. Highly anticipated album Only Revolutions was released in November 2009, cementing their place amoungst the elite of the UK rock scene.

Inspired by his cherished Fender Custom Shop '60s Strat, the Squier Simon Neil Signature Stratocaster puts the Biffy Clyro guitarist's own personal touch onto a Squier Classic Vibe series instrument. This vintage looking guitar features an alder body finished in Fiesta Red, complimented by a vintage-tint gloss maple neck with a 22 fret, rosewood fingerboard. The vintage styling continues with a 3-ply, mint green pickguard, aged plastic parts and vintage-style tuning machine heads and tremolo system.  Versatile tones come courtesy of three custom vintage-style, single-coil pickups and standard stratocaster 5-way switch, volume and tone controls.  The pickups feature a mix of alnico III and V magnets, making them ideal for both rhythm parts and cut-thru-the-mix solos.

The Simon Neil Signature Strat uses a Squier Classic Vibe as its starting point. I’m a big fan of the Classic Vibe line, and truly believe they're the best of the Squier bunch.

The Simon Neil Strat’s weight is on the lighter side of medium, and has all the right curves along with an expertly applied Fiesta Red finish. The neck has a comfortable slim 'C' shape and a nice dark Rosewood fret board. All the vintage hardware looks authentic... in fact, the whole guitar just looks and feels right.

In a blindfold test I doubt that many would think they were playing a budget instrument - the neck feels slick and fast, and an unplugged strum produces the kind of volume and resonance you’d expect from only the very best and most expensive tone woods!! In this price bracket you might think that the pickups would sound a bit thin or weedy, but that’s not the case either.

At low volume and played clean there’s sparkle, clarity and good depth... every position on the 5 way blade switch sounds authentic. Even at volume, where some of the cheaper pickups tend to reveal their weaknesses, these vintage custom pickups do a cracking job. I’d be more than happy to gig this guitar, no upgrades required. The icing on the cake, though, is that the tuning is solid and there isn’t a rattle or choke to be found anywhere on this neck.

We know these days that guitar manufacturers can produce great looking instruments on a tight budget, but often there have to be compromises in way the guitar feels and performs. How Fender have produced a guitar at this price point that delivers such a great look, feel and performance is beyond me. The Simon Neil Stratocaster is quite honestly one of the greatest 'budget' guitars I've ever played.... Outstanding guitar, outstanding value for money.
