This is actually the second occasion that Gibson have justified a Slash Les Paul Signature model, the first Custom Shop model was released back in the late 90's during the priod when he was a member of Guns & Roses ... So why a second Signature model several years later? Gibson and Slash claim that over the past seven or eight years, Slash's concept of what would make a great rock guitar has now changed, it appears that he has now matured (???) and therefore his playing style and technique requirements have evolved. To quote Gibson ..." The new Slash Signature model focuses on utility over elegance..." whatever that means .... What is certain is that the quality of the raw materials used on this guitar are top notch - as is the detail and care that has gone into the finish. You may also be surprised to learn that this Les Paul has a hidden weapon, the Slash Les Paul features a pair of conventional Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro pickups ...... plus a Fishman Power Bridge unit in the bridge.
What this brings to the party is an acoustic like sound quality that is unusual to hear from a Les Paul. The raw materials used on this model are Mahogany on the body with a carved Maple top, a Mahogany neck with a Rosewood fret board and 22 frets with Acrylic trapezoidal fret markers. As previously mentioned the main pick-ups are Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Hum-Buckers along with the Fishman Powerbridge unit concealed under the guitar bridge. The controls are slightly modified compared to a standard Les Paul configuration in that there are 3 volume knobs and a single master tone control along with a 3 way toggle switch for the Fishman adjacent to the volume and tone pots. There's the usual 3 way pick-up selector toggle on the shoulder of this Les Paul and the hardware is finished in Aged Nickel, the machine heads are the "Tulip Vintage Style" units and the finish is Dark Tobacco Sunburst with cream binding around the edge of the body. The Slash Les Paul Signature model also comes with a Custom Designed case, a certificate of authenticity and a custom guitar care kit.
Reviews
Having tried this guitar it is not something I would immediately identify with the rock icon Slash, this instrument has many fine subtleties not least of which is the electro-acoustic sounding Fishman pick-up that has been cleverly concealed under the bridge of this stunning Les Paul Signature model. The Custom shop finish is really on a completely different level to the standard Gibson affair - not that the standard finish is bad you understand, its just that the microscopic attention to detail on this guitar is incredible. No stone has been left unturned to ensure that you have the optimum playing experience when using this instrument. The tuning, intonation, action and immaculate neck all go to make this one of the finest Les Paul's I have ever had the pleasure to play ....
Of course there is the little matter of the price, this is an expensive guitar and the price tag is not for the faint-hearted, but that said it is a fact of life that we all know the price of luxury and perfection doesn't come cheaply ... The Seymour Duncan Hum-Buckers provide the classic Les Paul raunch when you crank the amp up to number 11 whilst in contrast the Fishman adds an air of subtelty and resonance when played through a clean channel and is reminiscent of a decent electro-acoustic guitar. You'll need to have a good deal of expendable income to buy this instrument on a whim, however take it from me that the dangerous part is sitting down to play this guitar, because once you've played it for 10 minutes or more you simply won't want to give it back .... this guitar is currently available at the Nevada Music Warehouse ...
