Gibson ES-330 VOS Semi-Acoustic Electric Guitar - Vintage Cherry
First produced in 1959 Gibson’s ES-330 had an unbroken production run right through to 1972. It’s made a few comebacks since then but this new re-issue is a real peach and I suspect it’ll be around for a long time to come.
The body of the Gibson ES-330 is made from laminated Maple with a single-ply cream binding and finished in a gorgeous tobacco sunburst. Two P90 pickups provide the power and are controlled with Gibson’s regular layout of two tone, two volume controls plus a three position pickup selector switch. The strings pass over a tune-o-matic bridge and terminate at the classic Gibson styled trapeze tail piece whilst there's also an Aluminium Bigsby tremolo fitted to this model.
The Gibson ES-330 neck is fashioned from a single piece of Honduras Mahogany and joins the body at the 16th fret unlike most vintage ES 330’s that had a 15th fret neck/body joint. The bound Rosewood fret board has 22 well fitted jumbo frets and is decorated with pearl block markers. The classic “open book” headstock is home to six Kluson tuners.Cosmetically the guitar uses a matured aging process to give the true vintage style appearance to this stunning Gibson ES-330 ...

The first thing you’ll notice when you pick this guitar up is its light weight. This is due to the lack of a central body block that you find in 335’s and many other semis. Played acoustically the guitar is much louder and more responsive than a 335. The neck profile is fantastic. It’s very comfortable and has that desirable “can’t put it down” quality, a subtle blend of Gibson’s ‘50s and ‘60s profile that I think we’ll find cropping up on other models.
P90s have a sound all their own and for many the perfect halfway house between traditional single coil units and full blown humbuckers. Played clean, the neck pickup has a classic Jazz voice that possesses great clarity. The great feeling neck and perfect setup make fluid runs a breeze to play and the guitar responds to slight changes in pick pressure and attack. The bridge pickup has bite but lacks the thinness you’d get from a standard single coil.
Both pickups together provide a wonderful musical jangle that’s great for rhythm work. With the volume halfway up on our amp the P90s provide break up heaven, a crunch sound to die for that can only be achieved from a true Semi Acoustic. It’s only when you start to go beyond this volume that you can encounter feedback problems but in the right hands it’s possible to produce some marvellous harmonics and notes that sustain forever. It may look similar but this is a real alternative to Gibson’s more famous 335. If you’re serious about tone and want a versatile guitar that can cover a lot of sonic ground this is a must try.
