Yet another model from the Epiphone Arch-top series of semi-acoustic double cut-away guitars, the ES335 DOT is based on the original Gibson 335 design.
The body and top is crafted from Laminated Maple with a Maple neck and Rosewood fingerboard.
The neck is set into the body in the usual Epiphone / Gibson tradition and feels comfortable with a semi-gloss painted finish. Within the guitar's central body block are two "Designed by Gibson" hum-bucking pickups, along with the usual twin volume and tone controls found on Epiphone and Gibson instruments.
On the left and right side of the main body are large F-type holes that lead to the hollow acoustic chambers that give the 335 its unique sound and sustaining qualities. The bridge is the regular Gibson tune-o-matic style which has a 6 saddle configuration and is complete with stop tail both of which are chrome plated.
The pick-up selector switch is adjacent to the floating black scratch plate that is adorned with the Epiphone letter E logo. The machine heads are sealed die-cast units that are chrome plated to match the rest of the hardware and the headstock has the Epiphone brand name on it.
Reviews
This is another stunning guitar from Epiphone, the combination of the Chrome hardware on the Black review model makes for an instrument with a striking appearance. The neck, whilst a little chunky is comfortable and the medium Jumbo frets allow plenty of room for fast and furious chord and solo work.
Being a hollow bodied guitar this instrument is resonant and quite loud even before it?s plugged into the amp, giving a hint about its acoustic and tonal properties. Once the guitar was connected to an amp I was able to hear how the ES335DOT sounded when amplified.
The bridge pickup was understandably bright and resonant whilst the neck pick-up was warm and vibrant with a smooth jazzy quality to it. When both pickups were played together the combination blends these sounds into a warm, slightly edgy tone suitable for rhythm playing.
This is yet another great guitar from Epiphone, the smooth mellow tones of the neck pick-up are warm and comforting whilst the raunchy blues bite of the bridge pick-up is perfect for blues-rock. The ES355DOT looks great and sounds great, but don?t take my word for it ? check it out for yourselves.
