Product Information
Since the 1960's, New York based company Electro-Harmonix have been creating classic guitar effects pedals such as the iconic Big Muff fuzz, Small Stone chorus and the Holy Grail reverb. Over the years, players such as Carlos Santana, Dave Gilmour, Kurt Cobain, Billy Corgan, John Frusciante and The Edge have relied on Electro Harmonix pedals to create their signature tones...and to this day, these timeless pedals can be heard on hundreds of recordings from all different genres of music.
The classic fuzz distortion that famous musicians such as Hendrix, Santana and Jack White relied on for its rich, thick, violin-like sustain. It has remained a timeless icon, the Big Muff has defined the sound of rock guitar for the past 30 years and is now popular with bands like The White Stripes and even bass players for its unique fuzz tone and variety of sounds.
Like the legendary Big Muff of the '70s, the reissue Electro-Harmonix USA Big Muff Pedal has 3 controls that let you select the finest harmonic distortion/sustain ever produced. The Volume control adjusts the output level. The Sustain control optimizes the long sustain with just the right amount of harmonic distortion. The Tone control provides a range of sounds, from dark fuzzy bass to piercing crisp treble.
A Big Muff is no ordinary distortion pedal, it is totally distinctive and a favourite of punk and trash bands for its totally filthy and saturated sound. Just like a Cry Baby should be in everyones pedal bag, you've just gotta have a Big Muff in there too, and bass players looking for some dirt should try her too, you'll be in fuzzy overdrive heaven too.
Reviews
The Electro Harmonix Big Muff has become a bit of an icon in the industry, it started it's road to fame when a certain Jimi Hendrix started to use this effect back in the late 1960's and you have to appreciate that this was in the days before master volume amplifiers and multi-effects pedals ...
The Big Muff is a distortion simulator guitar effects pedal and is famous for its over-the-top saturated distortion sound, some say (myself included) that the distortion is too saturated and because of this it can on occasion leave little seperation between notes. However it was popular during the punk era and again during the Grunge trend purely for the extreme amount of distortion that it produces ...
Some guitar players have been known to max out the sustain parameter and use the Big Muff with a volume pedal so that it emulates the sound of a violin - perhaps similar to the effect of an E-Bow. For me personally the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff is one of those guitar effects that you'll either love or hate, but either way give it a try before you pass judgement.
