Released at the Winter NAMM show 2009, the Boss ME-70 Guitar Multi-FX unit takes over from the Boss ME-50, and has a few extra tricks up its sleeve.
With a focus on ease-of-use, the ME-70 has simpllified rotary control knobs that provide easy tone adjustment and patch editing... rather than wading through menu screens, you'll enjoy the experience of dialing in killer tones... it's more reminiscent of classic stompbox pedals. You'll find 32 presets onboard, and space to save 32 of your own - and when you want to activate an effect, it's merely a case of stomping on one of the 4 footswitches on the pedal board.
Whilst the ME70 contains plenty of COSM Amp models, perhaps its best addition is the COSM Pre-amp section, which is technology that was only previously available within the Boss GT-10 and Legend series. You can now dial in a wider range of even more life-like sounds, even more rapidly. Audio quality is extremely good too, thanks to the better-than-CD-quality 24-bit / 44.1 khz digital convertors.
Two other exciting features on the ME70 are the 38-second phrase looper - which you can use to loop audio phrases and build up complex musical pieces - and an expression pedal that can be assigned to one of 6 parameters (such as Wah, Modulation and Delay Rate).
The Boss ME 70 runs on 6x LR Alkaline batteries, giving an average usage time of around 12 hours (although this can vary depending on conditions). There's also an optional mains power supply that's not included, but highly recommended for extended jamming time - once you plug into the ME-70, you'll be playing all day and all night!
Reviews
Taking over where the legendary ME50 left off, the ME70 provides the same ease of use and authentic Boss sound and build quality; but with some new, cool features. With new amp modelling section adapted from the flagship GT10, EQ and pickup converter (single coil to humbucker, and vice-versa) the great tone begins before any effects are applied! The first thing I noticed with the ME70 is how easy it is to use; whether using the various sections as individual stomp boxes, or saving and recalling patches; everything is done manually without the navigation of menu screens, and what’s more…. Almost all functions can now be operated with your feet, on the fly!
Then come the effects; ME70 hosts some new effects and delay modes... some of my favourites include the ‘slow gear’ effect (an early effect in Boss’ legacy), a ‘momentary’ delay mode and dynamic effects such as ‘touch wah’ that have been present on Boss bass effects for some time. The inclusion of a ‘solo’ pedal, and new expression pedal functions such as ‘modulation rate’ and ‘delay level’ mean the ME70 covers all requirements of a live effects unit.
The built in 38 second loop station, auxiliary input, headphone output and EZ tone features make the ME70 a fantastic practise tool as well as and all-in-one, live performance unit.
