Location: The darkest depths of the Nevada warehouse

By today's standards the BOSS DS-1 is an old pedal and perhaps uses older technology than some of the new-fangled stuff that's appearing at the moment, but consider for a moment that the BOSS DS-1 is one of the best selling pedals in the entire world and for very good reason. Like many other rock icons Boss got the design and sound of this pedal just right, it often made up for the short-comings that some transistor amps had and when used with valve amps it accentuated their strong points ...

 

The controls are simple and basic, but that's the beauty of this pedal and it shouldn't be compared side by side with the latest analogue to digital converters or pedals that can loop sample for up to 4 days, the BOSS DS-1 does one thing and one thing only ... It creates a good emulation of valve amplifier distortion and at the time of its release there was no other pedal around to touch it ...

 

Many of the guitar superstars of today will have started out as young hopefuls with a guitar rig that would have included the BOSS DS-1, the simple choice of control parameters (Tone, Level and Distortion) make this pedal ultra user friendly and I'm sure that it will continue to sell well thanks to many bands/guitarists experimenting with retro-style sounds and the trend for vintage equipment/pedals.
