Zildjian

Zildjian History

The Zildjian Company goes back as far as 1623 when Avedis Zildjian, born in Constantinople, practised his art as an alchemist, chasing the dream to turn base metal into gold. This led to his discovery of an alloy consisting of copper, tin and traces of silver, which had exceptional sound qualities. As his reputation grew it was given the name "Zildjian", an American word meaning son of a cymbal maker. The secret formula is now nearly four centuries old and has been passed down through 15 generations. Zildjian is now formally recognised as the oldest family owned business in America. The family success has been based upon staying close to musicians and working to their needs and experiences. Maintaining these close bonds has ensured that Zildjian continues to uphold its position as the world’s leading cymbal maker.

Zildjian Differentiators

Today we can see the wide range of cymbals that Zildjian offer, from the K Custom and A Custom cast bronze ranges to the sheet bronze ranges of ZXT, ZHT and ZBT series of products. Every range offers you a wide ranging choice of Crashes, Rides or Hi-Hats. The choice of product is wide ranging and versatile, and has long been the favourite of most of the world’s famous drummers from all aspects of music. Some will remember names such as Ginger Baker, Ringo Starr and Buddy Rich. Today when you see most set ups on stage they include an array of Zildjian cymbals. Many classical percussionists choose Zildjian as they know it will give them the best possible sound and enhance the performance of orchestral pieces. Many of their cymbals are still made in the age old tradition of hand beating and hammering to produce their trademark sound.

Zildjian Today

Zildjian has maintained its reputation for exceeding musicians’ needs and expectations, and has achieved this by consistently focusing on innovation, quality and improvement. By retaining these enduring values, the Zildjian family will strive to continue the heritage started so long ago by Avedis. Whether it’s a Hi-Hat, Crash or Ride, there will always be a Zildjian cymbal that will meet the requirements of the drummer or percussionist.
