The AC-90 is a recent edition to the Roland AC range and is specifically designed to compliment acoustic guitar players in need of high quality guitar amplification. Many acoustics and electro-acoustic guitars have the capability to connect to an amplified source and this amplifier from Roland provides plenty of power and some good effects that will enhance the natural sound of your acoustic instrument.
Power-wise this stereo combo amplifier delivers 2 x 45 watts and uses two 8? woofers to supply the balance between low and mid range frequencies that provide the body of the sound, whilst the high end sparkle comes from two 3? tweeters. It also has dual channels with one specifically configured for a guitar input and the other one for a microphone, it also features Roland?s own multi-band chorus effect with ?Wide-Mode? to broaden the stereo image of the guitar sound.
On top of this you can add reverb or delay and to allow optimum volume levels there?s an anti-feedback control feature. The chassis comes equipped with a dedicated tilt-back stand for improved sound dispersion and it?s possible to order a dedicated speaker stand as an add-on option, the AC-90 also includes a carrying case to keep your amp in pristine condition. There?s a dedicated XLR type line-out to feed a recording or sound desk and also other inputs on the rear of the cabinet for a tuner, woofer out, an auxiliary in and a headphone input.
The AC-90 is light at just 11.7Kg and with dimensions of 464 (W) x 323 (D) x 306 (H) mm it?s hardly going to cause any muscular discomfort from transporting it from gig to gig.
Reviews
The AC-90 sounds lush, I tried it using my Ovation electro-acoustic and was very pleasantly surprised with the results. Firstly the sound reproduction is crystal clear and the amp sounds very natural – ie it doesn’t colour the original sound of the acoustic by adding boosted bass, mid or top end frequencies.
The Neodymium speakers really deliver accurate tones and as I added EQ the sound was transformed but without any harshness, I also dialled up the multi-band chorus which when used subtly changed my six string into a very nice sounding 12 string model and provided a fuller sound ( as you’d expect). However you may need to re-equalise the sound when the chorus effect is on as it does lose a little top end as a result.
Wide mode gave a pseudo-surround sound type effect which, although it seemed to be effective on the immediate area around the amplifier, may not be so convincing if you’re sat in the 4th row of the audience … There’s also some reverb or delay to sweeten the voice if you’re singing along through the AC-90.
The voice channel sounded fine without being spectacular – but it’s very difficult to voice speakers to suit both a voice and an instrument, however the clarity was good, the effects gave the necessary depth and perspective to the vocal channel and the EQ helped to thicken the vocal sound.
In a nutshell, if you’re an acoustic or electro-acoustic player who’s currently in the market for a decent live amp that will enhance your live guitar sound and won’t give you a double hernia, then you could do far worse than trial the Roland AC-90, check it out at the Nevada Music Warehouse …
