Line 6 Bogner Alchemist 112 Combo Amplifier

German amp guru Reinhold Bogner's association with Line 6 and the subsequent creation of the Spider Valve amplifier was a great success. Now he's back with a new creation - the Alchemist 112 Combo Amplifier, a modern take on valve amp design. A two channel combo amplifier that includes a 12" Celestion speaker with a look and cosmetics that I think will appeal to both traditionalists and those seeking a more contemporary design.

The Bogner Alchemist 112 owes its tonality to a 6L6 Valve class-AB power section and a five valve -12AX7 pre-amp selectable power section ably assisted by a Celestion 12 inch Vintage 30 Speaker. The control layout consists of: Channel 1 (Gold) Gain, Treble, Mid, Bass, Volume, Crunch Mode, Variable Bright and Deep Switch.

Whilst Channel 2 (Mercury) features the following control parameters :- Gain, Treble, Mid. Bass, Volume, Variable Bright and Mid Shift. Common to both channels are Reverb Type, Reverb Level, Delay Type, Delay Level, Delay repeats (Feedback) and Tap Tempo. And if that isn't enough The Alchemist also features a selectable power section from 20 to 40 watts...

Trying the Bognor Alchemist 112 Combo amp in a sound proof booth proved to be an eye opener. Each channel has its own voice. Channel 1 is capable of sweet blues tones of the ?just breaking up? variety. Moving into Crunch mode turns up the wick and seems to accentuate pick response and tonal complexities.

Channel 2 is hotter. The creamy gain offers great sustain with tonal flexibility enough to produce classic British rock sounds through to modern metal. The icing on the cake for me was switching down from 40 to 20 watts. The amp changes its sonic fingerprint and conjures up an Eddie Van Halen ?brown sound?... mmm... nice...

The real proof of the pudding with any amp is can it cut it live? I was fortunate enough to witness this amp being put through its paces at my local Rock Music venue. I can tell you that it passed all the tests and then some... And for anyone who thinks 40 watts isn?'t enough for a gigging rock band, try telling that to the ringing in my ears...!
