We're constantly being bombarded with new products that promise to make us sound better, play faster etc, etc. In reality, it often turns out to be hype, with little or no substance. Blackstar amplifiers and pedals were launched with the familiar fanfare; let's find out if they can back it up starting with the Blackstar ht5 combo.
The solidly built cab of the Blackstar ht5 has been covered in black tolex and a very neat job it is too. The control panel layout is as follows. From left to right we have a single jack input, clean volume, channel changing button then overdrive, gain and volume. There are four EQ controls for bass, middle treble and ISF (more on this later), we then have a headphone jack socket followed by a 1/12 or 4/12 speaker emulation button, a bright red LED status light and two chrome switches for on/off and standby.
On the back panel, again left to right, we have the kettle lead mains socket followed by three speaker output jack sockets, a footswitch socket and an in/out for the effects loop whilst inside the open backed cab is a 10" Celestion speaker. Reviews
Right off the bat the Blackstar HT-5 5 Watt combo is pushing all the right buttons. The build quality and attention to detail is impressive, as are the looks. This is one handsome looking combo. It?s quite reassuringly heavy at 14kg but still very portable. The control panel is well laid out and looks both neat and classy with its row of chrome knurled knobs. There are far more features on this amp than any other I?m aware of in its class.
First off, I plugged in a Strat and was rewarded with big grown up clean sounds from the Blackstar HT-5. The flexible EQ works all the way round the dials and avoids the silly extremes of ear splitting treble or woolly bass. Changing to the lead channel though brings the biggest surprise. Quite how Blackstar have achieved these results for this money has left me baffled. The quality and enormity of the distorted sounds are nothing short of amazing. The depth and clarity pumping out of that 10? Celestion makes this the perfect recording tool, especially as this amp is super quiet at all but the very highest settings. I?d also be very happy to mike this amp up and gig it.
If you?re a staunch Humbucker fan then the news is just as good. Clean sounds ring out with authority. Switch channels and you?ll be transported to overdrive heaven. Again the EQ makes it easy to customise the sound the way you want it, especially with the aid of the ISF control, (Infinite Shape Feature). Fully wound to the right the ISF control lends a very British character (Marshall) to the sound. Wound the other way dials in an American (Boogie) flavour. The flexible overdrive control allows you to dial in everything from classic crunch to endless creamy distortion. This remarkable Blackstar HT-5 5 watt combo has more than lived up to the ?maker?s claims?. When you hear one you?ll want one. Boutique amp sounds in a portable, affordable package, it?s a no brainer. Check out the Blackstar range now at the Nevada Music Warehouse ...
