Ibanez PGM100RE Paul Gilbert 20th Anniversary Jewel Blue Electric Guitar

Paul Gilbert has been admired as a rock icon since the big hair days of the 1980's when he first burst onto the scene, now a little older and wiser Ibanez present his 20th anniversary model - the PGM100RE which is a re-working of Paul's original signature model that was released way back in 1989 ...

It has received an eye-catching make-over and now sports a dazzling Jewel Blue finish embellished with pseudo pink "f" type sound hole graphics and matching pink plastic pick-up covers. The pick-ups are Di-Marzio PAF Pro humbuckers and are joined by a single coil high output FS-1 in the middle position.

The guitar body is Basswood with a Super Wizzard Prestige Maple & walnut neck complimenting a 24 fret Rosewood fret board adorned with Shark Tooth fret inlays, pick-ups selection is via a 5 way blade type switch. Mr Gilbert has chosen an Ibanez Edge tremolo system and all hardware is finished in Charcoal.

Gig

by Gig Stig

I’m a big Fan of Paul Gilbert. We’re all aware of his dazzling technique but he also possesses fantastic song writing skills a great voice and the ability to play amazing solos SLOWLY! A skill that eludes many of his would be peers.

Blue and Pink wouldn’t have been my first choice of finish but it’s what lies beneath that counts. The five piece Wizard neck feels superb, it’ll put a smile on the faces of the widdlers but there’s also enough wood here for thumb over the edge players to grab a hold of. Add to the mix the bound Rosewood fret board and mirror polished jumbo frets for an addictive playing experience.

The pickup choice is a nod in the right direction for tone lovers with a pair of DiMarzio PAF like Humbuckers and a middle single coil that has approximately 25% more output than most. This gives it a better balance with the Humbuckers plus it’s loaded with Alnico magnets for a fatter, smoother tone. Played clean, the sounds are inspiring with a range of options that covers all the basses from rock to funk to jazz. With a bit of distortion added you have a blues monster or turn everything up to 11 for widdle heaven. I also found that with just the blade switch and single volume control to worry about rapid changes in sounds and textures were easy to execute making this one the most expressive guitars I’ve played. A guitar worthy of carry the man’s name. Top stuff...
