Snare Drums

When it comes to choosing individual snares, choice becomes very subjective, techno babble and snare jargon can appear to be confusing and the options quite daunting.

Wooden & Metal Snares

So to keep the choices simple a good way to review the options is to break down the preferences into two groups - wooden snares and metal snares; although there is also a 3rd option of Acrylic snares - however these are usually purchased for specific reasons.

The major difference between the wood & metal options is the sound; this becomes even more obvious when different snare drums are used in the studio, as high quality microphones and frequency filters really help to differentiate the two types. Wooden drums tend to have fat and rounded short tones - depending on tuning, whilst metal snares tend to be "edgy" with enhanced resonance.

Choosing the Right Hardware

One of the key aspects to bear in mind when shopping for snare drums is the actual drum hardware, the snare drum consists of a lot of hardware and if the lugs/throw offs aren't of a similarly high specification as the shell, the performance and endurance of the drum will be disappointing.
