Mackie's SRM450v2 is a portable active bi-amped loudspeaker - which, in layman's terms, means 2 speakers, 2 amplifiers and the electronics to make them work all in one box. This makes setup an absolute breeze - because everything's already connected and configured internally, all you do is plug a line-level source (or even a microphone) directly into the XLR socket at the back, and turn them on!
At 600W peak, a single pair of SRM450s will provide enough power for most pub/club gigs. However, Mackie also has some very clever unique electronics and physics in their design, that means (unlike other brands) the SRM450v2 has a very wide dispersion that fills the entire room with clear, punchy sound - not just the area in front of the speaker. Need more power? Not a problem, just daisy-chain several together with standard XLR cables, thanks to the 'Thru' socket on the back.
With its solid polypropolene cabinet, the SRM450 is built to survive life on the road, and can be used stood up, on its side as a monitor wedge, on a standard speaker stand, or flown horizontally or vertically. What's more, this latest version in an attractive blue colour is 20% more lightweight than ever at just 40lbs (18kg).
Other improvements to the V2 series include new powerful Class-D Fast Recovery amplifiers, which are up to 80% more efficient without additional distortion. That means they use less power and stay cool - even when driven at top volume, all night long. Plus, with all new transducers (including a neodymium woofer with 3-inch voice coil and heat-treated titanium compression driver,) the SRM 450 v2s deliver even more punch and clarity than the original Mackie SRM-450 loudspeakers.
The Mackie SRM450s are a fantastic choice for any small-to-midsize PA system - not only do they offer outstanding sound quality, but they make any engineer's life easier with their beautifully simple operation and light weight.
PLEASE NOTE: The Mackie SRM450 speakers are priced and supplied individually.
Reviews
If you've ever wondered what SRM stands for in Mackie's range, it's Sound Reinforcement Monitor - because when Mackie set out to design the original SRM450 loudspeaker, their mission was to create an active PA speaker that sounded as good as a studio monitor.
When it was launched, the original SRM450 acheived that and more... it sounded way better than any other active loudspeaker within a mile of its price range - and not only was the sound quality outstanding stood in front of it, but for the first time, the 'sweet spot' filled the entire room. Plus, on top of that it was powerful, light, reliable, easy to set up, and affordable! Hence the SRM450 became a favourite of bands, small venues and PA hire companies the world over, and joined that exclusive Hall Of Fame for gear that 'changed the game'. You could think of it as the 'Google' of small-to-medium PA systems.
Well, here we are with the new, improved SRM450 V2. On the outside, apart from the blue casing, things look pretty much identical - same combo of 12" woofer + 1.75" tweeter ... same versatile shape... same idiot-proof plug-and-play back panel... so is there really any improvement?
The answer is YES! Although you may not want to throw out your original SRM450's, if you're using some other brand or you're looking to invest in a PA system, look no further.
With upgraded amps, speakers and electronics, the SRM450 V2 takes everything that made the original great and builds upon it. They simply outperform every other loudspeaker in their class, with tight accurate bass, mids that are clear but never harsh, and smooth highs that keep going up to frequencies where other speakers have given up. And now they're lighter and more energy-efficient.... exactly what more could you want from a loudspeaker?! If you ask me, they're worth twice this price.
