The Roland TD-4K2 drum kit is an upgrade  from the previous model and Roland are calling it a "second generation" of V-drums, the TD4K 2 is still the entry level model but cetain elements of the kit have been improved and upgraded to provide greater value for money ...

The new additions to the Roland TD4K2 electronic drum kit starts with a mesh-head snare (which is actually the PDX-8 snare model) along with a cloth head kick drum pad (KD-9) ... The TD-4 sound module has also been upgraded with some additional percussion sounds and finally there's a dual-trigger cymbal pad that can be used for either crash or ride.

The kit arrives in two boxes with one box containing all of the pads, pedals and the sound module whilst a secondary box contains the actual drum rack along with the clamps and arms for the cymbal and drum pads.Within the sound module/brain is a new skill coaching application whilst Roland have also added a Quick Record/Play function for capturing memorable performances or for gradual improvement of complex rhythm parts ... Check out the Roland TD-4K2 at the Nevada Music Warehouse ...

Upgrades & Expansion:
The TD4K is also expandable with an optional pad, or if preferred, you can replace the ride cymbal with a Roland CY-12R/C 3-way trigger V-Cymbal. The TD4 is also compatible with the optional Roland VH-11 V-Hi-Hat, which can be mounted on a conventional hi-hat stand.

Before even sitting at the kit, the first thing you notice is the newly designed stand ... this is a new approach by Roland, the central module adds to the streamlined look of the kit (if very slightly obscured by the rack toms.) Whilst maintaining a small footprint, the stand looks visually appealing, feels really sturdy to play and allows for good variation of kit size and expansion.

Now we come to the sounds…… and what an improvement over the previous model ! With greatly increased wave memory, the level of realism and sonic expression of the sounds starts to rival the higher end V-drum kits yet at an affordable price. These sound are arranged into 25 impressive sounding and useable kits including: a stunning brushes kit, the original Roland 808 and 909 electric drums, a very dynamic percussion kit, numerous realistic live and acoustic kits  and….. One of my favourites; a wicked reggae kit ...!

VH11 and CY12RC compatibility mean this kit has no problems growing with your playing expertise, and the five coach modes are a sure way to improve. Unlike so many coach modes on electric kits; the user receives feedback after completing each exercise and is progress rated - this proved to be very addictive .... So much so that I couldn’t get off the kit until I had beaten my score! And, via the new graphic interface, this facility is far easier to use than on previous models. Be sure to check out the ‘time check’ and ‘quiet count’ modes - tricky but guaranteed to improve your timing ...

My own personal summary of the TD4 is that the mix in, coach modes, quick record feature and adjustability makes it the best kit for beginners on the market, but, with its stunning sounds and playability, it quite happily caters for experienced drummers also. I haven't played a kit under the £1,000 price bracket that comes close to the Roland TD-4K...and now the guys at the Nevada Music Warehouse are bundling with a kick pedal, stool, headphones and sticks, it's even better value!
