Reason has been around now for several years, essentially it is a Virtual Studio Rack crammed full of effects, samplers and virtual instruments, however it is a proprietary system by which I mean that you cannot use third party plug-ins - only those effects and instruments which come with this product. However that said, there is simply so much here to play with that you may not need to look elsewhere for plug-ins ...
Reason 5.0 has a vast arsenal of synths, samplers, drum machines, loop creators and a huge variety of effects to treat them with, Reason 5.0 also comes with a number of new features. Kong is a drum machine that combines sample playback, analogue-style synthesis and also acoustic modelling. Each of its 16 drum pads can use any of the above techniques and effects are built in too, making this a comprehensive self-contained device for drum tracks ...
As well as Kong there's a new loop-playback device - Dr. Octo Rex and can load eight REX loops and switch between each of them. The new and updated sample library reflects this and there's a whole bank of loops that work well together. Dr. Octo Rex has other capabilities, such as the ability to reverse individually sampled drum hits and allows you to draw pitch, pan and filter envelopes with your mouse.
Various sample-playback modules within Reason 5.0 can now capture audio from a live input, instantly turning them into fully- fledged samplers. By capturing, truncating and looping the sounds and then loading them into a sampler dramatically speeds up the process, and in some instances it's even possible to capture samples during playback - which is ideal for layering sounds for live performances.
