The Orange Thunder 30 guitar combo amplifier is an all valve Class-A amp featuring 2-channels plus a valve driven external effects loop. The Dual channels effectively consist of a Dirty and a Clean channel, the Dirty channel features Gain, Shape and Master Volume controls. Shape is an EQ control producing a variety of tones from rock to scooped metal.
The Clean channel features Volume and interactive Treble and Bass controls and can drive the output section directly for vintage Orange orverdrive sounds. The valve tones of the Orange Thunder 30 combo amp are produced by dual ECC83 Pre-amp valves driving four EL84 output valves biased in Class-A circuitry. Two ECC81 valves drive the external effects loop whilst the combo also features a Celestion Vintage 30 12-inch speaker.
When an amplifier's output valves are passing current at all times, the amplifier is said to be biased in Class-A, just like the Orange Thunder 30 twin channel valve guitar combo amp depicted here. Because the current is flowing at all times, an input signal causes the current to flow immediately to the speakers, and therefore the sound is very fast and responsive to playing dynamics without any latency. There is also less crossover notch distortion when the signal passes from the positive to the negative voltage and negative to positive, since each side of the output section is already turned on.
