This is the long awaited Marshall AFD100 that was announced at NAMM 2010, the amplifier is based around a much older 1970's pre-master volume designed JCM2203 that Slash used on the now infamous Appetite for Destruction album. The story goes that he rented a bunch of Marshall amps from a hire company but one stood out head and shoulders above the rest due to its amazing tone - and this was ultimately the one he used on the album. Conveniently he never returned the amp but then one day whilst the band were rehearsing and the amp was left out in the equipment truck, the hire company came and "re-possessed" it ....
Enter Marshall and a project to try and re-create the sound, tone and dynamics from the original 1970's JCM2203 but with contemporary technology and greater reliability. As of the writing of this article the design and tonal circuitry has been developed but Marshall are still fine tuning the cosmetics so as of its release the amp may not look exactly like the one depicted here. What we can say is that this has been a labour of love for Slash who has worked closely with Marshall to try and replicate all of the subtle nuances of the original amplifier head. Marshall have released some basic specifications for the AFD100 which are as follows :-
