Neither Ibanez nor Paul Gilbert needs any introduction from me. You know something special is going to come out of this meeting of minds. Is it going to be the ultimate shredder's guitar?
The body has been constructed from Basswood and is decorated with PGs fake F holes. A Maple fret board with 24 jumbo frets sits atop a five piece Maple / Walnut Wizard Prestige neck whose proportions are as follows. Scale is 648mm / 25.5? width at the nut is 43mm and at the last fret 58mm. Thickness at the nut is 18mm and at the 12th fret 20mm and the fret board radius is 430mm. Finishing off the neck we get the standard Ibanez headstock turned on its head and its home to six in a line Ibanez tuners, a string bar and locking nut.
The guitar is powered by a DiMarzio PAF Pro Humbucker in both bridge and neck positions, with a DiMarzio FS-1 single coil pick-up sitting between them. These are controlled via a single volume control and a five way pick-up selector blade-type switch. Finally, we have an Edge tremolo locking bridge finished, as is all the hardware in Cosmic black.
Reviews
This is an expensive guitar and warrants close scrutiny. I’m happy to report that build quality is top notch. The guitars weight and balance is also perfect, as are the frets, which have been finished to perfection. The whole neck feels wonderfully tactile and the set up is perfect straight out the case, a testament to Ibanez’s final inspection.
I’m a fan of DiMarzio PAF Pro pickups. To my ears they are the best at emulating the sound of Humbuckers of yore with the emphasis on tone rather than block busting output. I’m also a fan of this pickup lay-out coupled with a five way blade switch. This offers, I think, the best of all possible tone options. Wired so that the coils of the Humbuckers are split in positions 2 and 4 on the blade switch, it’s possible to go from full-on Humbuckers to a convincing Strat Quack!
Plugged in and played clean the above options sound great. Moving to the crunch option, again the sounds are top drawer and in a blindfold test (in position two) lots would be convinced they were hearing a Strat. With the amp flat out we get wonderful singing sustain. The sound is full and percussive. Chords sound huge but there’s enough clarity for single notes to be picked out and sing even in the lower registers. The neck truly is a wizard and is the perfect playground for widdling, one of, if not the best neck for sonic acrobatics. Couple this with the simple control layout that requires the minimum time and attention to operate leaves you free to get on with the job of making jaws drop.
