Yar ... de Svedes are back ....Here's another from the Hagstrom range of electric guitars namely the Hagstrom Select Swede in Dirty Blonde finish. When Hagstrom's production stopped in 1983 due to vastly increased production costs that made exporting virtually impossible, many of their models became collectors items.
Fast forward 20 years and all of the original CNC programmes and moulds have now been shipped out to a state of the art factory in China where production starts again. The Select Swede is made from a Mahogany body with a Flamed Maple top and Flamed Maple binding on the body and neck. The set Mahogany neck has Hagstrom's famous Resinator fretboard with Abalone and Pearl Shell inlays. It also deploys the patented H-Expander truss rod to prevent warpage ...
The two hum-bucking pick-ups are Hagstrom '58 Custom hum-buckers that each have their own volume and tone controls plus a 3-way toggle pick-up selector switch located on the lower shoulder of the instrument. Hagstrom have some pretty famous endorsees that include Benny Anderson from Abba and none other than Elvis Presley himself who used a Hagstrom guitar on his 1968 TV Special comeback simply called "Elvis". It was therefore particularly dissapointing that production of their instruments had to stop in 1983 ...
Well they're now well and truly back on the scene and their current range has a wide range of high quality instruments not least of which is the Select Swede, a kind of Les Paul hybrid. However there are many differentiating features that distinguish the Select Swede from a Les Paul, for example the Resinator fretboard uses a composite wood material that feels and plays like high quality Ebony.
Tonally this guitar offers a great clean sound that's warm and resonant and the neck pick-up wouldn't be out of place in a jazz quartet whilst the hum-bucker at the bridge does a very fair Larry Carlton impersonation once the amp is set up to suit. I have to hold my hands up and admit that I do like the Hagstrom range- they offer something a little left field from the standard Les Paul type models ... check out the model range at the Nevada Music Warehouse ...
