The MAX 158 is the next step up from the MAX 126. It offers five watts more power and a couple of extra inches on the speaker, all resulting in a much meatier sound. Don?t be fooled by the price, this amp still offers many of the features you?ll find on the bigger, more expensive amps, such as Peavey's exclusive TransTube® (tube modeling) circuitry.
Tube Emulation Circuitry & EQ
The MAX 158 includes a selectable gain control, allowing you to change the tone from modern sounding to vintage. Combine this with High and Low EQ controls and the result is a much more flexible practice amp than most of its competitors. The addition of a CD input and headphone output is a nice little addition, perfect for those late night jam sessions, playing along to your favorite albums.

The Peavey Max 158 is part of the entry level range aimed at the beginner who might wish to practice at home or in a bedroom. The Transtube circuitry adds a varying degree of tonal options and the old-fashioned warmth that comes from using valve based amplifiers. The CD input is a nice touch for learning your favourite bass lines and the 8” speaker will handle some of the lower frequencies better than the 6” model on the guitar version.
For the price, this is a very good combo amplifier although obviously it has been made to a budget and isn't going to give the guys at Trace Elliott or Ashdown too many sleepless nights. However I have no objection whatsoever in recommending this as a perfectly good beginners practice bass amp.
