Product Information
Markbass TSA500 Bass Amplifier Head 500 Watts
Markbass amplification is the brainchild of Italian musician and electronics boffin Marco de Virgiliis, this brand has been popular throughout europe for a few years now and is just creeping into UK retailers stores after impressing a wide range of discerning bassists.
The TSA500 amplifier head provides 500 watts of power into 4 Ohms and is packaged into a 2U rack mountable unit (rack mounting ears are supplied) although it is small enough and heavy enough to sit quite happily on top of a bass speaker enclosure. So what sets this particular bass amplifier apart from the rest of the elite brands ... ? Well for a start it has the flexibility of offering both a valve pre-amp and a solid-state pre-amp, and the neat thing is that it provides the user with the facility to blend the two pre-amps together to forge just the correct amount of warmth from the valves and clarity from the solid state technology ...
On top of this the TSA500 has 4 band EQ with Lo and Hi Mid, plus a Variable Pre-Shape filter and a Vintage Loudspeaker Emulator both of which add further sound-shaping options to the Markbass TSA 500. I was mildly amused by some of the control headings used on this amp which are a bit more humourous than the normal staid control titles. This amp has a peak LED lamp with the words "Too Much" written underneath to visually indicate when your signal is running too hot, there are other whimsical control parameter headings such as "Solid State Gas" for the Solid State Pre-Amp heading and also "Tube Fire" for the Valve Pre-amp setting ... only in Italy...
There are a few quirky features such as a headphone output (which is bizzarely labelled as "Private" and not "Headphones") and there's also a direct XLR output for monitoring or recording. The actual colouring of the fascia on the front face of the amplifier may not be to everyone's liking as it's a rather gaudy yellow, but that said it will probably stand out well on a darkened stage so maybe there's method to the madness ...
However despite the looks there's no getting away from the fact that this is a damned good bass amplifier, I'm a little surprised that they didn't include a compressor but there is an effects loop built in to the amp should you wish to externally process the sound with compression or chorus, check out this bass monster now at the Nevada Music Warehouse ...
