Product Information

The Nexus-Tube is part of the new bass range from Laney and as the name suggests it utilises valves on both the pre-amp and output valve stages. Kicking out a massive 400 watts RMS this amplifier should be loud enough to take almost anywhere. So let’s take a look at the facilities on the Nexus Tube, firstly there’s a single jack input with a 10dB pad for impedance adjustment but this single input comes with the choice of two channels labelled TUBE or FET accordingly. As the names would suggest the TUBE channel utilises valve technology whilst the FET channel offers a solid state alternative.

There’s a comprehensive list of valves used in this amplifier starting with the Pre-amp valves where you’ll find 3 x ECC83’s and a single 12BH7, and if you think that sounds a lot then the output stage uses 8 x KT88’s all of which will delight the valve anoraks amongst you. Equalisation consists of Bass & Treble shelving controls, Hi & Lo Parametric Mid controls, and a 6 Band Graphic EQ – pretty impressive stuff eh .. ? There’s also a Master Presence control and an on-board compressor which is a single control for threshold & range with auto level adjustment and is footswitch-enabled.

Speaker connections are via 3 x Speakon connectors and the impedance can be set to 2,4 or 8 Ohms. The Nexus Tube is a class A/B amp and has a variety of interfaces on the rear such as a dedicated Male XLR line out, a footswitch input, an input to connect an additional power amp, an FX loop and even a line input for permanent connectivity of a digital tuner. The cabinet design is constructed from Marine Grade plywood cabinet with large grip handles and the amp head weighs in at 34Kg with dimensions of 524 x 218 x 400 mm.

This is a real gargantuan amplifier kicking out a massive 400 watts and even standing several feet away you can feel how much air this baby moves when those ear-splitting bass notes rattle your ribcage. You almost feel that this amp should come with a Government health warning as it really will rattle the windows around the whole block.

The good thing is that the valve channel softens the ferocity of the output somewhat so that the bass notes can actually sound musical and not just a sub-sonic pulsation.

With careful EQ and sensible use of the compressor there’s a whole host of bass tones available from this amplifier and you can add further effects via the FX loop. A neat inclusion is the ability to permanently connect a bass tuner on-line for checking tuning in-between songs – although you’ll need to watch the batteries or buy an AC adapter.

This is an impressive amplifier and you’ll need to manage your sound carefully in the initial stages until you get a good feel for your gain levels – otherwise you’re in danger of obliterating the rest of the band so that all the audience can hear is bass frequencies.

However if used sensibly and tastefully this is one hell of a bass amp …
