Acoustic Bass Guitars

Within the last 15 years the music entertainment channel MTV has been sponsoring a series of "un-plugged" concerts by famous bands and artistes.

Essentially these are acoustic concerts where the artiste is challenged to present their music in a "non-electrified" environment and often with new arrangements of classic songs from the artists or bands back catalogue. This new trend of playing acoustic sets or complete concerts has provided an opportunity for the emergence of the Acoustic Bass Guitar.

Previously this role would have been filled by an upright or "double" bass, however, whilst the acoustic bass guitar is predominantly a large bodied acoustic guitar modified as a bass guitar, most acoustic basses have on board electronics for the purposes of amplification. Although this seems to be a contradiction in terms, the electronic signal feed is necessary so that the instrument can be heard within the auditorium via the house PA system, and as a feed into a mixing desk for TV and Video sound broadcasting.

Physically, most acoustic bass guitars resemble a Jumbo bodied acoustic guitar but with strengthened bridge and neck areas to address the extra tension created by thicker gauge bass guitar strings.
