Dynamic microphones are probably the most common type of microphone on the planet. Even musicians who have little or no interest in recording their own music have probably heard of the Shure SM58 - arguably the most popular vocal mic on the planet, which also just happens to be a dynamic.
Hard-wearing & Versatile Microphones
The reason these microphones are so popular is that they're relatively cheap to manufacture, they're rugged and durable, and they do their job exceptionally well with a minimum of configuration.
The difference when compared with a Condenser is that they have a propensity to be slightly less sensitive, and tend to impart some degree of character on the sound - however, this is often considered to be a good thing, and many dynamic mics have secured themselves a respected place in the studio world thanks to their individual sound.
For example, no self-respecting studio should be without at least one Shure SM57 - despite costing well under £100, many world-class studios and top producers still use this as a "go-to" microphone for snare drums, guitar cabinets and much more. But nowadays there's a whole range of dynamic microphones designed for specific applications.
