Description

Here's a new 8 track Digital Portastudio from Tascam - the DP02CF. This new version is a kind of retro blast from the past as many of the LED based menus have been replaced by old style knobs and faders.

Based on over 25 years of cassette Portastudio evolution it sports dedicated rotary controls for level, pan, effects send and EQ instead of the menu-cursor interface found on machines manufactured by Tascam's competitors.

The DP-02CF records up to 8 tracks to a 1 Gb Compact Flash card that will hold approximately 12 songs. It utilises a pair of CD-quality XLR mic inputs for recording in stereo that include phantom power for condenser mics and a direct guitar input. High and low EQ controls for gain and frequency are provided for each of the 8 channels.

The DP02CF also includes a multi-effects processor, stereo reverb and even a dedicated stereo channel for recording your mix. You can transfer tracks and mixes to a computer using the on board USB 2.0 interface, or alternatively use the Compact Flash media to transfer data from one machine to another.

by Gig Stig

Back in the late 1970's, Tascam laid down their marker with the first ever 4 track cassette based Portable studio. Although crude and basic by today's standards, at the time it revolutionised the industry and launched the affordable home recording genre.

Twenty five years later we have the DP02FC which encodes your music into digital data thereby providing outstanding sound quality and menu features that previously would have been considered almost impossible to achieve. However the most astounding thing is that all of this can be achieved for a lot less than £500...

So how does it sound ... ? Well the beauty of digital recording is that the DP02FC will sound exactly like the signal or performance that you record on it. In other words it immaculately replicates the original sound or signal that is played into it ...So if the sound is bad, it will be down to the engineer or performer and not down to the equipment - as was my standard excuse for shoddy demos in days gone by ...

It features some neat additions, such as the in-built multi-effects processor and stereo reverb and should you wish to you can dump everything onto a PC or Mac via the USB inteface or transfer data via the Compact Flash media. At a lot less than £500 - you can't really go wrong with the DP02FC, so come on, treat yourself to the DP02FC and write that number one hit that you've always been meaning to record ...
