This is a cool product from Alesis for all those budding beat mixers amongst you that enjoy mixing using the Apple iPod as the music source and as a storage unit. Effectively this means that should you wish to, you could record your backing tracks directly to the iPod and use this as your playback sound source for live performances.
So let’s look at the facilities on the iMultimix, this is a table-top unit and has 8 audio channels with 4 Microphone inputs and 4 ¼” jack line inputs and channels 5/6 and 7/8 are stereo (L & R) ¼” line-in channels. There’s 3 band EQ on each channel (Hi-Mid-Lo) along with a pre and post auxiliary control with send and returns that allows you to add any of the 100 on-board 28 bit digital effects that include Reverb, Chorus, Flange and Delay.
The iMultimix comes with a copy of Cubase LE music sequencing software so that you can also record to a PC or Mac courtesy of the integrated USB port and allows 16 bit recording at 44.1 or 48Khz. To ensure that your recordings are as clean and pristine as they can be there’s also an in-built Limiter to prevent distortion or clipping whilst each channel has a pan control and an individual gain knob.
Once recordings are complete they can be transferred to iTunes without the need for a special driver or complicated process. Needless to say there’s an iPod docking unit in the centre of the console and the recording control section has a Jog-wheel to necessitate the speedy location of a particular segment of music. Otherwise there’s a headphone output, separate level controls for playback and recording onto the iPod and Stereo 8-segment coloured LED meters to control the output level.
The Alesis iMultimix weighs in at just under 3 Kg and the dimensions are :- 340 W x 76 H x 248 D mm.
