Alesis ProTrack Handheld Stereo Recorder for iPod

It seems that everybody has an iPod nowadays and the ProTrack from Alesis allows you to easily record direct to your iPod anywhere. Just dock your iPod into the ProTrack, cover it with the protective clear shield, and you're ready to record.

The ProTrack's onboard pair of cardioid condenser mics (fixed in XY configuration for optimal stereo imaging) allows you to record impressive, 44.1kHz, 16-bit digital audio without connecting any additional cables or equipment.  It is also possible to connect other audio sources to the ProTrack via two combination XLR-1/4" jack inputs which also supply 48v phantom power for condenser microphones.  A built in LED meter offers a visual indication of audio levels and you can monitor or play back recordings via a 3.5mm stereo-headphone output with adjustable volume control.

Alesis' ProTrack is a convenient way to capture jam sessions, gigs, speeches, interviews, meetings and lectures.  It automatically date and time stamps your recordings to keep them organised and an onboard limiter ensures distortion free recordings.  The Pro Track can be powered via 4x AAA batteries or the included AC power supply and an a 1/4" threaded mounting point allows you to mount the device when using the optional mounting adaptor.

Some musicians may love the idea of turning their iPod into an audio recorder. If you're someone who has an iPod on you at all times, and you need to record voice memos, interviews, or lectures, investing in a recording accessory for your iPod makes sense.

Over the years, there have been various products that have succeeded at turning the iPod into a handy tool for recording voice memos and interviews, but there haven't been many options for making high-quality stereo recordings. Mono mics just won't cut it if you're looking to record a piano recital, or capture the sounds from a location recording to sample onto a keyboard.

So if you need an iPod-recording accessory that's a serious contender the Alesis Pro Track is one of the best options available. It uses XLR/instrument combo jacks and built-in stereo condenser mics. What the ProTrack has over the competition, though, is higher-quality internal microphones and the capability to work with mics that require phantom power.
