Zoom H4 Handy Digital 4 Track
The Zoom H4 is the bigger brother of the H2 product and comes with an abundance of features to justify the extra expense. But first let’s try and explain exactly what it is and what it does … ?
This diminutive product is essentially a mobile recorder with 2 built-in high quality condenser microphones that give exceptionally good stereo imagery.It can record on up to 4 tracks in 24 bit/96Khz digital quality as well as in MP3 format with 320kbps bit rate conversion.
It has a number of on-board studio effects that include compression, limiting and microphone modelling and comes complete with a 128Mb SD card for storage and distribution of data. Using a 2GB SD memory card will provide 380 minutes of recording with CD quality sound, the H4 features up to 34 hours recording when used in MP3 stereo mode and all performances can be monitored via the 1/8” headphone jack.
The USB interface also gives the opportunity to connect the H4 to a Mass storage device for archiving and subsequent retrieval of data. Users can expect 4 hours of continuous recording operation from 2 AA batteries and a back-lit, 128×64 pixel LCD provides the visual interface with which to edit and configure parameters.
The internal 4 track recording is presented in CD quality 16-bit PCM, with a 44.1 kHz sampling rate. There’s also a combination of high-impedance phono inputs for vocals, guitars, bass or keyboards whilst the icing on the cake is a multitude of internal guitar amp modelling effects that is directly equivalent to Zoom’s own G2 guitar processor.
The inclusion of the USB audio interface means that you can record directly onto your PC or Mac and to facilitate this Zoom have included a free copy of Cubase Light Edition 48-Track Digital Audio Workstation software. Also include with the H4 are the AC adapter, a windshield cover, a USB Cable and a tripod adapter.
