Sontronics STC-2 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone
Having recently gone through the curve of setting up my own project studio at home I was immediately curious when the Sontronics STC-2 appeared on my review schedule. Certainly its cosmetic apperance is very impressive and it comes in a sturdy flightcase. The microphone itself is crafted from a low resonance die-cast zinc body which incidentally goes a long way to preventing greasy finger marks and retaining the classy looks of the STC-2 and it also comes with its own shock-mount cradle ...
The Sontronics Microphones are manufactured in labratory conditions in Shanghai, China and the company assembled a collection of popular Diaphragm microphones to analyse their sonic characteristics and then emulate their strong points The result is a very affordable microphone that is perfectly suited to the vocal performance required within a studio environment.
Its performance is clean and clear and this microphone excels at the upper frequencies where the sound becomes smooth and sibillant, mid-range frequencies are clear and natural and can easily become wooly on budget microphones - but not here. The only slight crticism of this microphone is the drop in volume that occurrs when the lead vocalist sings slightly to the side ... However with proper microphone technique this should rarely happen and is a minor niggle on an otherwise excellent product ...
