Description

Here’s a mid-range mixing solution from Yamaha who offer the MG124c 12 input mixing desk which would be ideal for a small recording set up, live mixer or sub-mixer in a MIDI keyboard rig.

The Yamaha MG124C has a total of 12 input channels – four mono microphone/line inputs and four stereo line inputs. Two of the stereo line inputs can also function as mono microphone inputs, giving you up to six simultaneous mono microphone inputs when needed.

All of the connector inputs are top mounted for easy access and connectivity purposes and features high-quality Neutrik balanced XLR connectors on all four mono microphone/line channels and two of the stereo channels. The XLR-equipped stereo channels can accept mono microphone input either via the XLR or phone jack connectors.

The remaining stereo channels provide phone jack and pin jack connectors for compatibility with a wide range of sources. The four mono input channels also feature insert I/O connectors that let you patch external signal processing gear into those channels as required. Separate pin-jack 2TR inputs are provided to accept the output from a CD player or similar stereo source.

All six microphone preamps feature switch-able phantom power to take advantage of the natural, extended response of high-quality condenser microphone, whilst a single switch turns phantom power on or off for all microphone channels.

The MG124C features Yamaha's innovative one-button compression feature on mono input channels 1 through 4. This technology was introduced to combat the complexity of conventional audio compressors with their threshold, ratio, knee, makeup gain and other confusing parameter controls. Yamaha's one-knob compressor eliminates the need to understand the different facets of the compressor’s set-up, with a single control that lets you simply dial in the amount of compression you want.

In addition to the main stereo bus the MG124C features a stereo group bus and outputs that can be used for channel grouping, assign switches for the stereo and group buses are located next to each channel fader.

Channel and master level control is accomplished via 60-millimeter linear faders to provide a direct visual indication of relative level settings.

Yamaha have packed some good ideas into this small mixer and have delivered a value for money product when the price is taken into consideration. I particularly like the “one-button” compression feature that prevents an inordinate amount of time being used setting up compressors.

Whilst the range of the EQ is a little limiting it should be viewed via the cost of the unit as there’s no doubt that this mixer has been manufactured to a specific price break. That said, the MG124c uses Neutrik components and the build quality is good including all the faders which operate smoothly and noiselessly.

As I said at the beginning of this review, this mixer would be ideal in a small home recording set-up or as a sub-mixer within a MIDI keyboard or computer recording environment.

It may also be of use in a live situation although I would stress that it must be handled carefully and protected by some form of case or travel/gig bag. A good value for money item from Yamaha that performs admirably …
