Despite all of the technological advances within modern music in the 21st century, most vocalists, musicians and broadcasters still rely on the common or garden microphone stand. The object of the microphone stand is to hold the microphone at a suitable height and angle so that the user can sing or speak whilst keeping the hands free to play an instrument or hold a script.
The variety of sizes and shapes of Microphones can on occasion require different types of microphone stands. Typically these would include the basic straight stand model with a round metal base or the now more popular tripod style tubular base.
Other types of microphone stands are the Desk stand - often used by radio broadcasters or singers sat at a piano, the Boom stand - this has become very popular over the last 20 years and uses an extendable boom arm to provide space in front of the microphone for an artist to accompany themselves on an instrument.
Finally there is the Goose neck stand crafted from twisted core spring steel that allows very precise and accurate placing of a microphone, such as in the use of drum microphone placement.
