Description

Shure E3c Personal Headphones

I personally own a set of Shure E2 in-ear headphones and was therefore interested to review the next generation of in-ear headphone technology from Shure - namely the E3c Sound Isolating headphones.

Shure’s In-ear design essentially works rather like an ear plug, the idea is that by inserting the micro-drivers into the ear canal rather than them sitting by the ear lobe, they will create a seal that blocks out all unwanted outside noise so that you have a pure music signal delivered directly to the ear drum.

The E3c’s speakers are in fact wideband Micro-drivers constructed with studio grade components to produce high clarity audio signals with enhanced bass response. In order to facilitate the inner-ear “seal” and because every single ear is different, Shure provide a pair of disposable Foam Sleeves, three pairs (small, medium, large) of Flex Sleeves, and three pairs of Soft Flex Sleeves (small, medium, large) to ensure a comfortable and personalised fit.

The sleeves in the Fit kit gently mould to the curves of the inner ear to provide a comfortable secure fit, so that if you are wearing the EC3’s during an exercise session, they won’t fall out or become displaced. Shure provide a carry case for your EC3’s and throw in a 2 year warranty; these must also be some of the lightest headphones on the market weighing in at less than 1 ounce.

The micro-drivers have certainly been upgraded since the E2 model and provide a wider frequency range with greater bass response. The soft flex sleeves are also new and are a welcome addition as I’m sure many people will prefer their soft comfortable texture.

So what about the sound, well this is a subjective and sometimes controversial topic, but to my ears they sound fantastic. High shimmering top end frequencies have plenty of sparkle, smooth mids pad out the intermediate frequency range and the bass is tight and punchy. More importantly, after using these on a long transatlantic flight, they don’t make the ears tired like some other headphones that I’ve used in the past.

The EC3’s are not cheap at well over a hundred pounds, but let’s face it, anyone who’s willing to spend that sort of money on headphones is someone who appreciates high quality sound reproduction, and that’s what these headphones are about … quality. If you wanna cross the river you gotta pay the ferryman, if you want high quality audio reproduction headphones you gotta buy the EC3’s …
