There are a few basic common sense rules that apply to help keep your musical instrument safe and secure. Most musicians have an emotional attachment to their instrument and would be devastated if it were lost or stolen. Therefore, follow these rules of thumb to help keep your instrument safe. Some are perhaps a little obvious, but are valid nonetheless:
Never leave your instrument unattended at a performance - particularly at the load-out when items are being carried out to a vehicle which may be parked on a public road or street.
Never leave your instrument overnight in a vehicle merely because you're too lazy to carry it indoors, aside from the obvious security risk, the extremes in temperature that may occur may damage the raw materials.
Consider having your instrument valued each year for insurance purposes and review and update your insurance policy to ensure the information is current.
Take a photograph of the instrument for insurance and recovery purposes and note down any relevant information such as serial numbers.
