Practice amplifiers are generally small in size and are of the "Combo" type where the speaker and amplifier sit within the same housing. They are typically used for rehearsing at home or at a small rehearsal location and their diminutive dimensions make for ease of transportation and set-up.
Their power rating tends to be no more than 10 or 20 watts and most manufacturers now include a headphone facility on the amp so that personal rehearsal can take place without causing offence. Other features of practice amplifiers include the ability to overdrive the input to create distortion and some practice amps also include reverb.
Many practice amplifiers have an input for attaching a CD or MP3 player to allow you to jam along with your favourite artists. What's more, their compact footprint means that when not in use a practice amplifier can easily be stored away out of sight.
