Description

Roland Fantom G8 Music Workstation

The G8 is the flagship model of the new range of Roland music workstations, namely the G6, G7 and this particular model the G8. Whilst all 3 models share many facets of the technology used in the creation of this series of music workstations, the G8 has a few extra tricks up its sleeve ....

Firstly it has a larger, (8.5" colour) more user friendly GUI (Graphic User Interface) - otherwise known as a screen to the likes of you and I. Other additional bells and whistles include a new sound engine, a new audio/MIDI sequencer with 128 MIDI tracks and 24 Audio tracks and the ability to route multiple effects to each sequencer part (up to 16 effects).

It also has a USB interface so that you can connect a mouse for a more practical way of clicking around the screen.  The G8 can be expanded by the addition of up to 2 x ARX expansion boards and holds up to 256Mb of memory, it also accomodates external instruments by having on-board XLR Mic and quarter inch jack inputs for the audio track recording facility ...

You can load VST and AU plug-ins for use with Cubase or Pro-Tools and the USB addition means that the data can be dumped to a PC or Mac.The outer casing of the unit has been designed with a more rugged and robust feel so it should easily withstand the rigours of the road ...

I was privileged to see the Roland Fantom G8 masterly demonstrated at the London International Music Show by Roland's brilliant keyboard demonstrator Luke Edwards. The demo used a combination of pre-programmed instrumental tunes and individual sounds to present the quality and range of sounds and features available on this flagship model.

Firstly the 400 sound patches are pristine ultra high quality samples that sound simply amazing ... and have an uncanny realism and natural element that will be a joy to behold for keyboard players and programmers. There's also a great sampler that's very simple to use and when you add in the on-board 24 track audio recorder and 128 track MIDI sequencer you can start to understand that the Fantom G8 is a very powerful workstation.

The digital effects like the sound patches are high quality and up to 16 effects can be used at any one time. The various sliders and controls are ultra flexible with almost any task assignable to any slider or circular controller and alongside this there's a bunch of sample pads for manual triggering of samples. To properly justify and describe the myriad of features on this keyboard would take 5 or 6 A4 pages of copy, so the best recommendation I can make is to watch the video demo above and get down to the Nevada Music Warehouse and try this amazing instrument for yourselves ...
