The HP201 is the next step up from the Roland’s basic RP101 piano. As with the RP101 this piano features Roland’s newly designed “PHA Alpha II” keyboard. This 88 note piano offers you the authentic feel of an acoustic grand, with a weightier touch at the lower end and a lighter touch in the higher registers, what’s known as a progressive hammer action.
Just like an acoustic piano, the HP201 also features 3 foot pedals, a damper/sustain pedal, soft pedal and a sostenuto pedal (allowing the user to sustain a chord whilst playing unsustained notes over the top). Unlike on the RP101, the HP201’s damper pedal is “graded”. The more the pedal is depressed, the more sustain effect is produced allowing greater control and expression.
The elegantly designed cabinet is also upgraded from the RP101 with added legs at the front for greater stability. This space efficient design also features a smooth sliding key cover to protect the keyboard. Best of all, because it’s a digital piano you’ll never need to get it retuned!
Upgraded Sound
Unlike the RP101 which features a grand piano sound that was sampled in octaves and then pitch shifted, the HP201 features a truly multi-sampled sound. This basically means that each note was individually sampled from a grand piano. Not only that, each note was sampled 4 times at various volumes!
This vastly improves the tonal colour and response of the piano sounds making it sound much more realistic. Another tonal upgrade from the RP101 is the addition of a full general MIDI sound set. Although this is only available in playback mode, it does allow the HP201 to recreate the full sounds of MIDI backing tracks when connected to a computer. The sounded is boosted through a 2x 25w amplifier and speaker system, more than enough to fill any living room.
Great Teaching Facilities
Along with the usual features you’d expect to find on a digital piano such as a metronome and performance recorder, the RP101 also has a twin piano mode. This mode allows you to split the piano right down the middle, effectively giving you 2 half size keyboards covering the same octaves.
Not only does it split the keyboard, it also splits the pedals giving each section a separate damper pedal. This allows teachers and duet partners to sit next to each other, individually playing the same notes…but on different places on the same piano! It even has 2 headphone sockets for silent duets and practice.
