Description

Roland E60 music workstation

The Roland E-60 arranger keyboard is one of the new generation of workstations that quickly allow you to design and experiment with different musical arrangements for your own original material.

The E-60 rapidly allows you to flesh-out your musical arrangement so that you can hear how all the respective musical parts will sound when produced in a specific style.

Sounds and styles

A good starting point is the 64 note polyphony which allows complex and sophisticated voicing within the arrangements; this is further enhanced by a massive 120 different styles of musical arrangements so you can experiment to your heart’s content. Roland have even re-designed the aesthetics of the keyboard thanks to a team of Italian designers and the fact that the casing is moulded high density plastic makes the keyboard much lighter and therefore easier to transport.

On board Sound System and Database

The E60 comes with an in-built sound system comprising 4 speakers and a bi-amplified system which includes bass reflex and digital bass parameters. The settings for the keyboard are managed through a large LCD screen incorporating a 16 grey-scale graphic display. An on-board data base manages musical files, songs, styles and arrangements; new arrangements and songs are created by the internal 16 track sequencer and style composer.

A style converter can be utilised to convert one of your own original tracks into a different style or that of a pre-composed standard midi-file. The Digi-score feature provides a professional music score read-out with 4 stave score, chords and lyrics.

Internal Storage

The E60 has an internal storage capacity of 16Mb on solid state disk, it has further storage capabilities via a floppy disk drive and memory card slot (PCMCIA). One of the newer additions to the Roland keyboard range is the D-Beam controller, this is a light sensing controller that can be used to provide real-time changes to wide range of parameters merely by waving your hand over the D-beam. The E60 has a USB port which allows direct connection with PCs or Macs allowing files to be easily exchanged and providing midi communication.

The first thing that strikes you about the E60 is the incredibly realistic sounds that are contained within the patch banks. Check out the demo songs and you can’t fail to be impressed by either the sounds or the expertise of the programming.

This keyboard has plenty of features and sometimes having so many buttons to press can seem a little scary to potential purchasers, who’s fear is that they will have to spend too long reading the manual and not enough time being creative. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have to frequently refer to the manual during the first 24 hours in the company of this workstation, however by day two things were starting to fall into place and a basic understanding was well underway.

There are certain features that will be rarely used on this model – depending on how you plan to use it of course, however for me the E60 would be an experimental tool to find the best type of style and arrangement for original material. You could probably expand on this concept and produce some special arrangements of classic tracks in styles that have almost certainly have never been done before (Ace of Spades done in Big Band style?)

Anyone who has bought a midi keyboard in the last 20 years knows full well that there is always a painful and frustrating learning curve with modern day electronic synthesizers and workstations at the start of the relationship. Providing you are willing to embrace this learning experience you should have no problems with the E60, which is a great tool for experimenting and being creative with either original or existing material.

A definite one to check out for all the budding songwriters and arrangers out there …
