The Roland V-Piano was undoubtedly the star of the show at the 2009 Winter NAMM exhibition, the boffins at Roland's R & D facility have cooked up a very impressive form of software synthesis that provides a staggering emulation of the leading Grand pianos on the market today. Previously this technology was dominated by "Sampled" Grand Pianos, however samples are not without their imperfections and for the purist or trained ear it was relatively easy to detect a sampled grand from the re-trigger point - which gives an un-natural reproduction of the note ...

Roland have taken 10 years to perfect the V-Piano technology which is not just about recreating a natural and accurate reproduction of a Grand Piano but also looks at other parameters such as the type of hammer that strikes the strings. There's also the question of the number and length of the strings plus the raw materials used on the strings, the physical return of the piano key once it has been depressed by the finger and how this affects the velocity and timbre of the sound.

There are many adjustable parameters on the V-Piano that can create a unique sound for the musician, for example the keyboard can be split into zones and particular zones can have specific processing added to their performance - such as slight variations in tuning, resonance and timbre. Aside from this there are other advantages to Roland's technology such as the ability to create "virtual" pianos that would not be practical in the real world. Examples of this are patches where all of the piano strings use copper wire (these are normally reserved for bass strings only) and another where the software simulates that all of the strings are made from silver, producing a bright, resonant sound that's similar to the Bruce Hornsby piano sound from the late 1980's ...

Even the piano keyboard has been given an overhaul to ensure that the performer retains the best possible playing experience when using the Roland V-Piano ... Roland have once again raised the bar with the V-Piano - expect more to come in the next few years ...

I was lucky enough to hear the V-Piano in Roland's private hotel suite at the NAMM show, where it was demo'd through some expensive sounding studio monitors ... I have to be honest and say that the new Roland V-Piano sounds pretty amazing ... I challenge anyone to tell it apart from a £100, 000 Steinway in a blind test ...

There's lots of processing power within the new V-piano - 4 times as much as in the Fantom G range, however Roland have not skimped on any area of this product and the cosmetic look , the feel and the sound are all of the highest possible quality. The fact that Roland are using synthesis as the basis for the sound means that there is no need for velocity switching like on older Sampled Grand models, this in turn enhances the natural and realistic feel of the V-Piano ...

The Roland V-Piano costs a significant amount of money, in fact a small fortune to most people ... However, the cost is still within the affordable range of a large percentage of the general public when priced against a £100, 000 Steinway grand - for which you not only need a lottery winner style bank account, but also a Grandioso property that has sufficient space for your Steinway. For a fraction of the cost Roland have delivered a Steinway quality Grand Piano that will fit comfortably into most people's homes - and although bulky rather than heavy, it is possible to transport the V-Piano for those who wish to do so ... whilst the Steinway may prove to be a little more difficult to fit into the back of your estate car -even with the seats down ... This is undoubtedly the future of the Grand Piano ...
