Description

Ibanez AEL2012TKS TransBlack Sunburst 12 String Electro-Acoustic Guitar

This Ibanez 12 string single cut-away electro-acoustic model is crafted from Sycamore, Maple and Mahogany wood – the top is flamed sycamore, the sides and rear are maple whilst the neck is mahogany.

The fret board material is Rosewood and contains 20 frets with pearloid dot position markers, the machine heads are die-cast gold plated Ibanez Smooth Tuner AS sealed units. Moving to the opposite end of the instrument the compensated bridge is the Ibanez Ivorex II in Rosewood with 12 Ibanez advantage bridge pins that hold the strings in place.

The Ibanez Squeal Repeal pickup features an innovative feedback reduction system that maximises on stage volume and does so without any annoying feedback squeal creeping into the mix. It does not require adjustment nor is any configuration of the controls required. Aside from this the built-in tuner on the SRT preamp makes tuning a simple, accurate and speedy process.

The review model was in Transparent Black Sunburst with cream binding on the body and the decorative sycamore top was further enhanced by an attractive pearloid rosette around the sound hole.

The choice of a Sycamore top on the AEL2012ETKS is somewhat unorthodox and it took me a while to decide if I liked the un-amplified sound because of this. It doesn’t have the same brightness as for example Sitka Spruce but the fact that the guitar has 12 strings and therefore twice the resonance of a normal 6 string acoustic balances out this observation.

I particularly liked the neck on this instrument as some 12 string models have unusually wide necks to allow spacing for all 12 strings, however this usually means that they are cumbersome to play – but not this one. The neck was sleek and fast but still allowed plenty of room for swift chord changes …

The pre-amp and pick up should also be praised for the ability to re-create the natural sound of the guitar in an amplified environment and for allowing such high on-stage levels without feedback.

Unless you play in an out and out folk or country band the chances are that you’ll only occasionally pick up this instrument for a song or two onstage or the odd recording session, but as an instrument on its own this is a fine guitar.

Well built by the guys at Ibanez and with a smooth and sultry acoustic sound.
