Fender Tim Armstrong Hellcat Electro-Acoustic SE Natural Mahogany

This is a traditional 60's style Fender acoustic that has been given a 21st century make-over, Tim Armstrong - guitarist with punk band Rancid based his signature design on his own aging 60's style acoustic guitar that he uses to compose most of the band's material on. His collaboration with the luthiers at Fender resulted in the Tim Armstrong Hellcat Acoustic SE in Natural Mahogany ...

The body of this acoustic has been crafted using Mahogany and likewise on the neck which has a Rosewood fret board, the Pearl acrylic fret inlays take the shape of a pair of skulls on the 12th fret and "Hellcat" logo on the 3rd, 5th,7th and 9th frets. The headstock has 3 nylon button machine heads on each side and is finished in black with a white Fender logo ...

At the opposite end of the Tim Armstrong Hellcat Acoustic SE   sits the Rosewood bridge that uses white nylon bridge pins for string retention,  this instrument has an on-board pre-amplifier that allows it to be connected to an amplified source - the Fender FTE3-TN preamp with built in tuner. The guitar has cream body binding and a tortoise shell scratch plate adjacent to the sound hole ...

I must confess to not having heard of Tim Armstrong before now, but more power to his song writing elbow for bringing something different to the table. Mahogany is recognised as a first rate tone wood but not seen too often used for an acoustic’s sound board. Add to this the natty finger board inlays, distinctly shaped scratchplate, bridge and headstock and we have an attractive alternative looking guitar that’s going to turn heads.

Given this is the left handed version; I’ve called for the assistance of Lefty, our in-house southpaw to put the guitar through its paces. Mahogany is renowned for its warmth and that’s exactly what we get here. Played as a straight acoustic, the guitar displays good volume and projection with decent string balance. The highs sound a little muted, probably as a result of all that mahogany, but that will suit a lot of players.

Plugged in it’s easy to dial in some extra sparkle should you wish. Fenders FTE3-TN preamp offers plenty of sonic options and I suspect that for most players finding a sound that matches their requirements will be easily achieved. The smooth C profiled Maple neck added to the playing experience and Lefty had no problems rattling through his acoustic repertoire. In summary, I think Fender have yet another winner on their hands with this handsome Electro Acoustic. The spec list is impressive given the modest outlay. Star name association, lots of unique features coupled with a good performance, both unplugged, or amplified, they’ve even included a Tim Armstrong strap. Oh and don’t let’s forget it’s a Fender.
