Description

The Ibanez EP9 Steve Vai electro-acoustic guitar is manufactured using high quality resonant woods; the top is made from Engelmann spruce whilst the rear, sides and neck are mahogany. The neck utilises a Rosewood fret-board and is decorated with ornate yellow pearloid “Tree of life design” as stipulated by Mr Vai himself.

The guitar is fitted with sophisticated electronic circuitry in the shape of the Fishman Acoustic Matrix pick-up and also the Fishman Aura pre-amp that provides amongst other things 6 selectable custom acoustic sound images that have been pre-programmed into the Aura. The pre-amp also includes active 3 band EQ, on-board tuner (Chromatic) and anti-feedback control.

The EP9 uses satin-gold Grover machine heads whilst the body has a single cut-away to allow access for soloing on the higher frets. The guitar is finished in a light brown tan colour that is described as “Resonant root beer” and has a decorative inlaid rosette around the sound hole featuring Steve Vai’s trademark design.

Over the years Steve Vai has endorsed various guitars and amps and the EP9 is his take on how an acoustic guitar should be made. It’s worth noting at this point that due to the extraordinary ability of Steve Vai he probably uses an acoustic guitar in a different way to the likes of you and I and perhaps therefore his instrument requirements are slightly different.

That said, let’s take a look at this beauty – the colour and finish is extremely attractive with stunning inlaid pearloid vines draping the entire length of the fret board. However when I sat down to play this instrument I found the guitar action unreasonably high which took away much of the pleasure of playing the instrument. Thanks to the skilled staff at Nevada – this was quickly resolved and I once more sat down to enjoy the experience of playing the EP9.

Considering the use of excellent quality woods such as Engelmann spruce and Mahogany I had expected that this instrument would have an outstanding resonance and full-bodied tonal performance. Whilst the sound is undoubtedly very good it's not what you'd call a classic acoustic resonant sound with the frequencies being dominated by smooth mid-tones. I guess this is neither good nor bad - just different, but then Steve Vai is undoubtedly one of a kind.

However a distinctly typical acoustic sound emulation was achieived when the guitar was connected into an amplifier as the bright resonant snap was enhanced by the Fishman Aura pre-amp. The pick-up and pre-amp faithfully reproduced the instruments natural sound and allowed the top end to be tweaked to add brightness and definition. This was a sound to please even the most demanding electric or acoustic player ...

If you're a Vai fan - you're gonna want to check this beauty out ....
