Gibson Gary Moore BFG Signature Model Lemon Burst

For many years Gary Moore has played a late 1950's Les Paul and is revered amongst guitar lovers for his technique and tone - particularly his ability to  sustain a note ... Gibson have now re-created all that Gary Moore loved about his 1950's Les Paul within a new Gary Moore signature guitar built around the Gibson BFG model.

Irish rocker Moore, preferred the non-pretentious simplification of the BFG model and has worked with the luthiers at Gibson to achieve a unique blend of classic old features combined with cutting edge guitar technology. The Mahogany body and Maple top have been painstakingly chambered so that the guitar feels light and well balanced but doesn't lose any of the resonance and sustain that the tone woods provide ...

The rough mill finish allows the natural grain of the wood to appear on the surface of the instrument which is then hand sanded to give the instrument that "well-worn" relic appearance. The neck is also Mahogany with a Rosewood fret board and a  thicker, rounder profile, emulating the same neck shapes found on Moore’s personal and original Les Paul Standards from the late 1950s. The neck is machined in Gibson’s rough mill using wood shapers to make the initial cuts. But once the fingerboard gets glued on, the rest—including the final sanding—is done by hand.

The pick-ups are a blend of young and old with a P90 in the neck position and a Burstbucker 3 located by the bridge, the guitar is finished with a  smooth coat of satin nitrocellulose and painted in an attractive Lemon Burst finish ...

Gary Moore holds hero status amongst many rock guitar players and his popularity will no doubt fuel interest in this Gibson Les Paul Signature Model attractively presented in Lemonburst .... Moore has been quoted saying that the core element in acheiving the correct guitar sound lies within the combination of the correct tone woods and pick-up blends.

Subsequently he has worked closely with the luthiers at Gibson to produce a model that meets all of his requirements and yet is still not excessively expensive ... This guitar is surprisingly light when first picked up thanks to the chambered body, and although the cosmetics do not contain as much wow-factor as on other Gibson models this guitar still has a certain elegance to it ...

Tone-wise this Gibson Les Paul ticks all of the classic sound boxes and the mixture of the P90 and Burstbucker pick-ups create plenty of light and shade tonal options with the P90 voiced slightly brighter than the Burstbucker. This is perhaps one of the most perfect combinations for those amongst you playing a mixture of both rock and blues ... Check out this instrument at the Nevada Music Warehouse now ...

BFG, 15 July 2010

Overall I’m delighted with the guitar, I have a couple of quibbles, but that might be my own fault for not actually seeing one up close before I bought. There are a number of great write ups on this instrument which will do a better job than I can regarding the electrics and hardware of the guitar. The sound is great no quibble there. The slightly different pick up mix gives a great range of sounds which is why I chose it. Excellent mellow sounds similar to the B.B. King sounds or raunchy attacking sounds from Gary Moore, with a kill switch to stop all that screaming mayhem. The tone control has a wide variation of effect too. The balance is nice, with the body slightly lighter than my other Les Paul, it sits well on your neck. The neck is slightly wider and more chunky than my other guitars and reminds me of my first jumbo guitars, I like it because it suits my hands, which are on the big side without long spidery fingers that so many of the guys who demo playing have, lucky devils. The case is very well made and should withstand the roughest roadie, and it has lots of nice fluffy stuff inside. What I’m slightly disappointed with; the BFG means it is not finished to the usual high gloss of a Les Paul, but I was surprised that there is bare wood in places with a rough texture, and without any finishing coat. Some of the fret wires have quite sharp edges and the fret board itself feels quite sharp along the edge, uncomfortable when sliding along the strings. I don’t know why they put a clear cover on the back over the electrics. Why would you need to see the wiring? If you are just looking for sound then this is a great guitar, but if you are looking for pretty then I think you would be disappointed. To be honest I have a couple of well gigged and travelled guitars that look smarter.
