Description

Fender Strat American Series Black RW

So here we are then, I finally get to review a guitar that has become a Global Icon and has such a rich musical heritage that musicians all over the world get misty eyed at the mere mention of its name – The Fender Stratocaster.

I can vividly remember the day in my late teens when I finally got to own my very own Fender Strat, and can  still recall the “click” of the brand new catches on the hard case and the feeling of total awe as my eyes first met my brand new Fender Stratocaster.

Anyway, enough of my first love – let’s have a look at the US Fender Strat and see why the genius of its design still holds strong today. In fact, little has changed aesthetically with the Stratocaster since its debut in the 1950’s – technology may have improved the manufacturing methods and some of the on-board electronic and hardware components, but essentially it’s still as it always was – a testament to the genius of great design.

The body is made from Alder with the now legendary “C” shaped Maple neck and Rosewood finger board. It still has the regulation 22 medium frets and the 3 staggered single coil pick-ups with a single volume and two tone controls. However on the US Strats the second tone control activates a special “Delta-tone” system which provides a high output boost to the bridge pick-up and special “No-load” tone control for the middle and bridge pick-ups and these are controlled via the 5 way blade selector switch with shielded wiring.

Nowadays, the individual bridge saddles are stainless steel, more stable, and very slick-looking. (The originals were meant to be concealed under a chrome "ashtray" bridge cover, but this quickly came to be used exclusively for what its namesake would imply.)

The rocking tremolo is still based on the same concept as the original design, but instead of the original six screws the new tremolo rocks on a much cleaner two-point system that's easier to adjust and more accurate. The strings are now spaced tighter at the bridge and wider at the head nut, which makes clean left-hand work easier and helps you avoid bending the high strings off the fret board.

Music didn't stop evolving in 1954, and neither did the Stratocaster. You'd imagine that in almost 50 years Fender would have evolved better ways to manufacture the Stratocaster. And you'd be right, always following Leo Fender’s lead by interacting constantly with professional players, Fender has hit upon a number of undeniable improvements on the modern day American Series Strat.

The bridge pickup has a slightly higher output and is perhaps a little less bright than on the Strats of old, which produces a distinctive sound. Purists may not prefer the new sound over the originals but once again this is such a subjective opinion.

The switching system has also been improved with a fully shielded five-way switch, versus the old 3-way switch. In addition to the dedicated multi-pickup options on the switch, the pickups are now set up out of phase with each other so that the multi-pickup positions cancel hum, effectively giving you a forward and a rear hum-bucker, each with a wide tonal range.

The pickups are set up, balanced, and inspected more carefully now than ever before, just check out the height of the magnets and you'll see that the individual magnetic pull and tonal quality of each string is adjusted for so that all of your notes are in the same dynamic range.

The fret board radius has also evolved from the old 7.25" radius to a flatter 9.5" radius, which makes string bending easier. The fret board edges are rounded and the frets themselves have been widened to a medium-jumbo size, so compared to standard narrow frets, they are much easier to fret; you miss fewer notes in fast runs and generate less buzz when playing chords.

So why is the American Strat better than say a Mexican or Chinese equivalent? The answer is simple, attention to detail during the manufacturing and set-up process. Manufacturing techniques have improved greatly in the last 49 years and contrary to what some rival guitar manufacturers would have you believe the American Strats that come off the line today are much more consistent. They have tighter-fitting neck joints; straighter necks; better, staggered, more-stable tuners; and a low-friction string tree.

The modern American Stratocaster is a far superior instrument to its hoary ancestors, but like old girlfriends you always smile wistfully when you remember your first Stratocaster ….
