A wallet friendly version of the Gibson’s Custom Shop Zakk Les Paul Custom that although comes in at well under a quarter of the price, in reality comes much closer to the original than the price suggests.

Strapped on, the guitar feels substantial, though it’s not a knee buckler. We have a traditional Les Paul layout so all the controls etc fall nicely to hand and incidentally are of a good quality. One of the main departures to a regular LP Custom is of course the Maple neck topped with a Rosewood fret board. Zakk likes the extra bite and definition that the Maple neck adds. It also feels very smooth and tactile.

In use and plugged into the clean channel of a good valve amp the blend of the materials used in construction with the EMG pickups proves a winning formula. There’s extra bite from both pickups, most notably the neck unit which can sometimes sound a little woolly. There’s also plenty of power on tap and with the crunch button engaged fat classic rock sounds have real authority and weight. Turn up the wick for solos and you’ll love the clarity and bite from the bridge unit. Flick to the neck for thick creamy notes that sustain beautifully. In terms of both feel and sound this Epiphone is no poor relation its far closer to the illustrious Gibson Custom shop than the price suggests. Great value!
