Description

Many musicinas may not be aware that the original SG was to have been named after Les Paul himself, however he was dis-satisfied with the feel and the look of the guitar and at the last minute asked that his name should be removed from endorsing this particular model.

Despite this minor set-back Gibson launched the guitar naming it the SG (Solid Guitar) and it immediately became an instant hit with musicians world wide. It has evolved over the years and had several make-overs but is still as popular as ever today. The main difference between the SG standard and the SG Special is the choice of pick-ups, the Special uses an Alnico 490R humbucker at the neck and a 490T at the bridge - both models are presented in open coil configuration.

The Gibson SG Special has a body made from multipiece Mahogany with a one-piece SG-style neck. It also features a 22-fret Rosewood fret board with dot inlays, the 2 hum-buckers previously mentioned with 2 volume and 2 tone controls. The pick-ups are managed via a 3-way pickup selector, and the Chrome tune-o-matic bridge has a stopbar tail piece. The package includes a Gibson deluxe gig bag.

This guitar was massively popular in the late 1960's and early to mid 1970's, there was something about the sound of the SG that captured the essence of that era as it helped to launch the genre of "Heavy Rock".

Many elite guitarists such as Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Paul Kossof and Dutch guitar virtuoso Thijs Van Leer often used the SG in live and studio environments. Guitarists liked the simplistic design and the small intimate body shape whilst the body of the guitar was slim and therefore light.

However the combination of the all Mahogany body and neck and the twin hum-buckers provided a refined yet raw rock sound that defined a generation. The modern day SG still retains all of those core features, and combines them with the leap forward in guitar technology that has exploded since the 1970's.

The neck is still beautifully slim and elegant, whilst the Alnico 490 hum-buckers spit out a raucous energy that provides the classic anthemic rock sound - ably supported by the sustain enhancing Mahogany body and neck. The SG Special is now available in a choice of colours,  Worn White, Worn Yellow and Ebony ...check out these models at the Nevada Music Warehouse ...
