Many musicinas may not be aware that the original SG was to have been named after Les Paul himself, however he was dis-satisfied with the feel and the look of the guitar and at the last minute asked that his name should be removed from endorsing this particular model.
Despite this minor set-back Gibson launched the guitar naming it the SG (Solid Guitar) and it immediately became an instant hit with musicians world wide. It has evolved over the years and had several make-overs but is still as popular as ever today. The main difference between the SG standard and the SG Special is the choice of pick-ups, the Special uses an Alnico 490R humbucker at the neck and a 490T at the bridge - both models are presented in open coil configuration.
The Gibson SG Special has a body made from multipiece Mahogany with a one-piece SG-style neck. It also features a 22-fret Rosewood fret board with dot inlays, the 2 hum-buckers previously mentioned with 2 volume and 2 tone controls. The pick-ups are managed via a 3-way pickup selector, and the Chrome tune-o-matic bridge has a stopbar tail piece. The package includes a Gibson deluxe gig bag.
